The system incorporates galvanised steel wire assemblies, reinforced with twisted wire strands, sandwiched in a slurry surfacing layer and fixed to the existing surface with nails or hook bolts.
With significantly reduced budgets in both the public and private sector, road works are increasingly carried out to re-habilitate the existing network. Repairing cracked road surfacing by applying an additional layer of asphalt will extend the life of the surface however, the cracks and inconsistencies in the old pavement are persistent weak spots. New cracks are easily initiated and can subsequently propagate to the new road surface as a result of temperature and traffic stress.
This means the deficiencies in the old pavement are in a way reflected at the surface, resulting in increasingly common "reflective cracking". Reinforced Micro Asphalt is the latest in a new wave of technology seeking to further extend maintenance work.
